Benny Rodrigues

Benny Rodrigues (born 13 October 1982 in Rotterdam) is a Dutch DJ and producer of Portuguese descent, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Dutch electronic music. He has been DJing since he was fourteen, and credits Michel de Hey with getting him into house and techno. Under his own name he plays house and tech-house — funky, groove-led, with acid, minimal and Detroit influences — while since 2011 he has used the alias ROD for his techno work, a sound described as deep and repetitive, ranging from Detroit and Berlin techno to acid and dub. He built his reputation on the Dutch club circuit in the 2000s, with a long-running Saturday residency at Antwerp's Café d'Anvers and appearances at Detroit's Movement festival. His 2007 collaboration with Darko Esser, "Paradox", came out on Darren Emerson's Underwater Records. As ROD, his debut EP Malmok appeared on Ben Klock's Klockworks in 2011, followed by releases on Chris Liebing's CLR, Richie Hawtin's M_nus and Adam Beyer's Drumcode, and on his own imprints RODlabel (founded 2019) and the strictly hardware-based Rod20 (2020). He has remixed techno staples including Slam's "Positive Education" and Carl Craig's "Poi Et Pas" as 69, and is known for marathon sets at Berghain, Trouw and Perron. Rodrigues works without management, handles his own bookings and keeps a deliberately low social-media profile. In 2021 fellow DJs voted him the most influential Dutch DJ in a list of fifty compiled by VPRO's 3voor12. During the pandemic he released ROD20 In The Mix, built entirely from more than 300 of his own productions. At ADE 2024 he played an ambient set to an audience seated on yoga mats, arguing for a more mindful approach to DJing, and in 2026 he closed Dekmantel Festival as its headliner.
